Christmas Back Streets
Popular music is all about the new – relationships, experiences, being young and single and dancing. Christmas music is about homecoming, nostalgia, looking back to a more innocent time in life. The best songs are pretty old. Most were written in the 1970s and earlier, and many of the original versions of those songs were released long before. They usually have short, repetitive lyrics and standard themes. They don’t even really have to make a lot of sense. Mel Tormé’s “A Christmas Song” is just a litany of images: chestnuts roasting, Jack Frost nipping, carolers, mistletoe, Uncle Tom Cobbley and all. And we love it.
The two most prolific artists are Michael Bublé and surprisingly, the acappella vocal group Pentatonix who have had 16 songs in the Billboard Top 100, one more than Bublé. So where are the new Christmas classics?
Wham’s Last Christmas is at No 8. Is there a better version of it?
We play some of the less travelled songs..
