Hand me down songs

Why would a songwriter might give another artist a great song?

Collaboration maybe? The royalties? Sometimes the song suits another artist better – and, naturally, seeing a big star singing your song is a mind-blowing experience. Today, in the first hour, we’re showcasing great songwriters who selflessly gave songs I’ve playlisted to others – and in the second, hour, the same songs after they’ve been altered and washed.

In the songwriting masterclass, you don’t just take notes, you take the whole song..

Testament

The Good Book includes chapters on love, betrayal, redemption, and morality. These themes are universal, yet personal. Musicians have drawn inspiration from it for centuries. And it’s happening today. Here. Now. In these songs.

Different authors, times, places, themes, plots and outcomes. Everyone’s life is mirrored somewhere within it. Rich in imagery and metaphor, providing a wealth of material for songwriters to draw upon. A book yet to be equalled, yet to have a sequel, prompts creators to check their moral compass.

I’ll testify to that..

The Land of Nod

The phrase ‘Land of Nod’ originates from the Book of Genesis. It refers to the place where Cain was exiled after he killed his brother Abel. The name ‘Nod’ comes from the Hebrew root meaning “to wander,” symbolizing Cain’s life of wandering after his banishment.

Over time, the phrase evolved into a playful expression for sleep, thanks to a pun on the word “nod” (as in nodding off to sleep) popularized in the 18th century by the satirist Jonathan Swift.

Flute

The flute adds amazing possibilities to any song. Like a lofty, somehow timeless voice, adding a certain je ne sais quoi. It particularly works well in jazz contexts and where the musician is trying to create big statements as in Prog Rock or in standing on one leg scenarios as with Jethro Tull.  Intros, bridges, instrumental breaks – when a flute enters a pop song, it bursts in like a sunray and scorches the listener. Shoot from the hip; hip from the flute…

Tilting at Windmills

Tilting at windmills is an English idiom which means fighting an imaginary enemy, originating from Miguel de Cervantes’ novel Don Quixote. This is often called Imposter Syndrome,

Whilst tilting is jousting, or in today’s language, fronting up to.
