Ladders from The Ghetto

The Ghetto has been a source of inspiration due to its rich cultural heritage. From African rhythms to Latin beats, jazz to hip hop, The Ghetto has produced musicians who have gone from real rags to real riches. The struggles faced by those living in The Ghetto have often been a source of inspiration, a spiritual ladder for its listeners. The dream is to get out, but leaving sometimes pulls at the roots of the inspiration and the ladder wobbles..

Imagine a urban ghetto, with tall, drab-coloured buildings. The buildings are covered in graffiti and there are various broken windows throughout the scene. However, growing out of the tops of the buildings are beautiful, vibrant ladders reaching towards the sky. These ladders represent the hope and potential for growth in the midst of even the bleakest of environments, encouraging those in the ghetto to reach for something better.

Some people want to get on the housing ladder. This show is the soundtrack for people trying to climb any ladder they can find.

Fortunately, The Ramones ask us to dance; we take the skinheads bowling and play the theme from Joy Pop. You, our audience, are the housebuilders, we wield the chisels.

We play a couple of dance tracks from the Ramones; take the skinheads bowling before a bit of psychomania from The Damned. Then a brilliant cover of Depeche Mode’s ‘People are People’ from Vaja. The Soul of the Nation

It was good to see the inclusion of a Gospel choir in yesterday’s Coronation ceremony.

It created an atmosphere of reverence and respect, while adding a touch of modernity and vibrancy.

Tomorrowland

There are countless songs written about tomorrow. And yet tomorrow doesn’t at this stage exist.

The word tomorrow represents the unknown. Some songs showcase the joy of looking forward to tomorrow, other songs express the worry associated with waiting for tomorrow.

Many of the songs are about a strained relationship with someone. How changes in a relationship might affect partners in the future. For others tomorrow is symbolic of hope. Of a brighter day.

Dr Seuss, the American children’s author and cartoonist put it this way:

“Today was good/Today was fun/Tomorrow is another one.”

So, why are so many songs written about something that doesn’t exist?

The hopes and fears may never arrive, so let’s leave it as just the day after this one.
