Music from Within

Music triggers strong emotions and raises awareness. Strong feelings remind us of the things we need to survive as a human race – reproduction, survival and the protection of our civilization through shared knowledge.

Societies with a musical culture have flourished because music creates identity, carries important messages and inspires people to care for other members of their community.

So, the deeper the music, the more belonging, more hope for the future and a greater sense of wellbeing at the heart of society.

This week we play music from within that reassures us that we can work it out..

Music from Within.

Fears and tears?

Hearing robots cry?

Ghosts inside?

Need a shoulder to cry on? Try this..

The Heart of Soul

Neo soul was put on the map by Motown President Kedar Massenburg during the late 1990s He used it to define a style of music that emerged from soul and contemporary R&B. His discovery Erykah Badu defines the genre. With its roots in soul music, neo soul is distinguished by a less conventional sound than contemporary R&B, with elements ranging from jazz, funk, and hip hop to pop, fusion, and African music. It links traditional R&B influences, socially conscious lyrics, and strong female voices. Heart and soul; love and sacrifice; unsafe and unsound.

It also sounds great on a Sunday afternoon.

This week we dig behind the wardrobe and dust off the extraordinary Russian post punk unbanned band, Human Tetris; for the first time on radio ‘Smash it Up Pts 1-4’ from The Damned; new instant RnB superstar Pink Pantheress; Gladys Knight in funk mode; the Scouser Jamie Webster with the outstanding protest song of the year; The Pastels Doo-Wop vs The Pastels Indie; the return of The Kooks; the rebirth of Grace Davis – the best songwriter ever to appear on X Factor and a real under the rock classic ‘Complicated Shadows’ from Elvis Costello.

Plus the wit, wisdom and wierdness of Roy and Matt.

This is not so much an invitation as a backstage pass to the best gig in the world ever.

Where’s Home for you?

The first thing we ask someone when we meet them, after their name, is where they are from, or the more insightful where’s home for you?” We ask, not just to place them geographically, but because we recognize that the answer tells us something important about them.

Memories, are triggered by the physical environment. When you visit a place you used to live, your brain wiring can cause you to revert back to the person you were when you lived there. Whilst you can’t possibly live everywhere you once called home but you can put photographs of it on your walls.

No one is ever free from their social or physical environment. And whether or not we are always aware of it, a home is a home because it helps define who we are, where we are now in our lives and what we’ve left behind.

Coming home is one of the most emotive phrases in the English language…..and it has its own music that we are playing today. Oh, and does having more than one home mean that you’re schizophrenic? No just multi-faceted.

Passion in the Grooves

Songs in the key of determination, conviction, and love. Passion demands action, because with it you do amazing things.

Without action, passion is just unrequited longing. Passion pours petrol on the smouldering embers of ambition. When you have passion for something, you love it even when you hate it.

Don’t Let Go

Letting go of things simply makes them cling limpet-like to your subconscious.
Repeatedly divesting yourself of the past simply reinforces it – & music soundtracks it.
This week we explore songs about how many times it is necessary to escape from the same cell..

Partys having parties and partings. It’s all happening. Fortunately, the only moves we are planning are moves in the direction of great music – suggested by our Lost Immortals members.

This week an amazing variety of songs linked by one thing. They have all passed the Stannard/Staples taste test.

Listen this week and see if you can spot the musician that Roy has met in person.
