The Healer

Healing with sound is believed to date back to ancient Greece, when music was used in an attempt to cure mental disorders. Throughout history, music has been used to boost morale in military troops, help people work faster and more productively, and even ward off evil spirits by chanting.

More recently, research has linked music to a number of health benefits, from boosting immune function and lowering stress levels to improving the health of premature babies.

But you don’t have to buy this – and not even available on prescription – It comes free with The Whole Nine Yards. A 2 hour treatment that starts sunday at 3pm.

This week we take our cue from music bar habituee Eric Pangman and check into the greatest venue in the world and order a Scotch, a bourbon and a beer alongside George Thorogood; become veteran day drinkers with Bloc Party; jive with Jimi Hendrix and Deke Dickerson, cut out the imbibing middle man with Living Colour, operate the room with Gomez, forget our codes and keys with Death Cab for Cutie, find our guiding key thanks to Judy Pearson and turn the whole joint into a palace at 4am. Later we accept Hannah Sands invitation to sleep on me and in the morning join with Willie Nelson as he assures us that all things must pass.

A great night without going out. See you at the bar.

Ordinary Miracles by Erica Jong

Spring, rainbows,

ordinary miracles

about which

nothing new can be said.

The stars on a clear night

of a New England winter;

the soft air of the islands

along the old

Spanish Main;

pirate gold shining

in the palm;

the odor of roses

to the lover’s nose. . .

There is no more poetry

to be written

of these things.

The rainbow’s sudden revelation–

behold!

The cliché is true!

What can one say

but that?

So too

with you, little heart,

little miracle,

but you are

no less miracle

for being ordinary.

Bridges

This is a kind of sequel to last weeks show about walls.

The bridge is used as a picture of communication and union, between heaven and earth or any two places, countries or states. Some see it as the connection between God and Man. It may be the passage to reality, or a symbol for travel and crossing to a better place. When we dream of bridges it can mean that  we are moving up to a higher state or an ascension. It is the end of one cycle and the beginning of another. In some cultures it is seen as the link between what can be seeing through a glass darkly and the transition to seeing things clearly. It can mean a desire for change. In asking if you are ready to cross it can be a test of vision or bravery. So do you burn bridges, leave the water under them – or cross from your old life to your new? We’re playing some songs to help you find out..

Walls

Each of us is a We build our own walls, brick by brick. Sometimes our walls are barricades against ideas and feelings we don’t like. So this week we  play songs about walls, internal and external, self-built or erected to keep others out.. Roll away the Stone

Seasonal songs rarely include Easter. So for this show on Easter Day we’re going to play some music inspired by Easter, some that symbolises resurrection and the rise after the fall.

We make room for an emotional reading of WB Yeats ‘Easter 2016’ by Liam Neeson with music  by Zachary David. A couple of classic hymns and gospel songs are reinvented for 2021 and namecheck a few people I bumped into yesterday. But first we’ll remember why this day is so special.

Former undertaker and Transylvanian Dave Vanian starts the show by exhorting that we should ‘Let’s Get Lost’, fellow Immortals..

The Datsuns opine that ‘The Gods are Bored’ whilst Kraftwerk remind us that Radioactivity is an ever-present danger. Lauran Hibbberd just says ‘Bleugh’ which means ‘Bleugh’ on her home Isle of Wight. We play the long lost original Mike D’Abo demo of ‘Handbags and Gladrags’ and a rare John Martyn song ‘Under my Wing’ sees us out with a promise of protection from a man who sadly needed it more than most..

Lost Immortals found by our listeners.
