The Cat’s Whiskers

The Best Tracks of 2021

In no particular order, I have selected the 22 tracks that have made the most impression on me over the year. Very few of them were big hits – but I don’t think that’s because my taste in music is misdirected or faulty. The more likely answer is that these tracks don’t fit into the commercial formula that record companies and streaming services like to lay down.

As we look forward to a New Year, the fact that you can listen to these songs is another reason why local and community radio must be preserved. If you haven’t heard it, you won’t know how much you love it.

Instant credibility at hip New Year’s parties..

Christmas Back Streets

Popular music is all about the new – relationships, experiences, being young and single and dancing. Christmas music is about homecoming, nostalgia, looking back to a more innocent time in life. The best songs are pretty old. Most were written in the 1970s and earlier, and many of the original versions of those songs were released long before. They usually have short, repetitive lyrics and standard themes. They don’t even really have to make a lot of sense. Mel Tormé’s “A Christmas Song” is just a litany of images: chestnuts roasting, Jack Frost nipping, carolers, mistletoe, Uncle Tom Cobbley and all. And we love it.

The two most prolific artists are Michael Bublé and surprisingly, the acappella vocal group Pentatonix who have had 16 songs in the Billboard Top 100, one more than Bublé. So where are the new Christmas classics?

Wham’s Last Christmas is at No 8. Is there a better version of it?

We play some of the less travelled songs..

The show leads off with ‘I Know I’m Losing You’ from ‘Every Picture tells a Story’ that has hardly ever been played on the radio – probably because a superlative Kenny Jones drum solo near the end. If anything this is topped by Lynott and Lizzy live in 1983 with ‘Cold Sweat’; a burst of Lemonheads prior to ‘Shame About Ray’; Swedish dream pop from The Radio Dept. and The Mary Onettes; Cigarettes after Sex, Black Country, New Road; Buffalo Tom; Tom Misch; the best rock band you’ve never heard of ‘The Ocean Blue’ plus new soul sensation Olivia Dean – and an epic Villagers endpiece called ‘The First Day’.

Is that a Harmonica in your pocket…?

The #harmonica (also known as the blues harp or mouth organ) is a compact way of having the Blues in your pocket. Its quavery, wavery sound can be melancholic, rocking, bluesy and in Larry Adler’s case, as Scottish as the bagpipes. This week we are gathering together some of the greatest harmonica songs ever recorded – from Bob Dylan’s ‘Mr Tambourine Man’ to Neil Young’s ‘Heart of Gold’; Stevie Wonder’s ‘Fingertips’ which is pretty much how to play the harp in one song; to perhaps the greatest harmonica player of all time – Toots Thieleman – the sound behind the ‘Midnight Cowboy’ theme.

Along the way we’ll hear contributions from Mick Jagger, Magic Dick of the J Geils Band; Lee Brilleaux of the Feelgoods; Jonny Marr with the Pet Shop Boys and the greatest use of the harp in recent popular music – Beck with his freestyle performance of ‘Saw Lightning’.

Join me to get to the harp of the matter..
