Only Joking

The Sad Clown paradox is where comedy exists on the outside and depression and anxiety on the inside. Smokey Robinson captured this beautifully in ‘Tears of a Clown’.

Robin Williams, Frankie Howerd, Kenneth Williams, Tony Hancock, Peter Cook and Spike Milligan all suffered from cyclothymia which drove them in pursuit of gags and quips in professional settings, despite inner turmoil.

Humour is used as a form of self-medication. So there is a constant anxiety amongst comedians that people may stop laughing and their careers, and even their lives may be over. That’s why dying on stage is literally no joke.

Some great songs have been written on this theme – some by writers with personal experience of depression.

This week’s show is about funny faces and broken hearts.

Murmurations

Murmurations are flocks of starlings that twist, turn, swoop and swirl across the sky in beautiful shape-shifting clouds.

Just before dusk, small groups of starlings from the same area come together above a communal roosting site. The group grows ever larger, moving in unison in an aerial dance that casts beautiful shapes against the waning daylight. All at once acrobatic, majestic, balletic, bombastic.

One of the most famous starling murmurations in Britain takes place around the skeletal, derelict West Pier on Brighton’s stony seafront. Up to 40,000 birds arrive from as far away as Scandinavia to winter alongside their native cousins on the pier.

This show is the soundtrack to the 80,000 wings of Brighton. Some flying. Some trying.

Episode 29 Rapture and Verse – Poetry converted to music by women.

Poetry is everywhere and in some ways you can find it in every song. Pause and listen to the lyrics of the next song you listen to. Sometimes the words are the soul of the song and when a great melody underpins them the results can be rapturous.

This week I choose songs based on female poetry, some, as Maya Angelou‘s poem Phenomenal Woman does, celebrate the strength of women and others talk about motherhood, growing old, losing love and triumphant survival. Others apply a unique female twist on classic poetry such as Joni Mitchell’s beautiful take on Rudyard Kipling’s ‘If’. The power of women, words and music

And as a bonus we showcase three female singer-songwriter stars of the future: Billie Marten; Freya Ridings and Hattie Webb. You’ll want to say you were there..

Summary

THE LOST IMMORTALS – EXPANDING YOUR MUSICAL HORIZONS

Ep 122 Sunday 25th July (AKA Roy’s 65th)

on Burgess Hill Community Radio 103.8FM with Roy Stannard and Matthew Staples

On this landmark show we explored the lost genius of Daniel Johnston across 3 tracks written by the man himself, one performed by him. We checked out Foy Vance and the links between him, Pete Townsend and Rachel Fuller – and some bloke called Ed Sheeran.

Three of the best guitar players in the history of the cosmos turned up and plugged in – Gallagher, Moore and Bourgie – sadly not as a band in their own right. We shared Cigarettes After Sex – the band – and The Common Linnets, the Dutch group who nearly won Eurovision but have gone on to become one of Americana’s finest exponents. Plus two modern, ultra cool examples of how steel drums can enhance your music.

The extended version is nearly 3 hours long on Mixcloud and Spotify
