Is that a Harmonica in your pocket…?

The #harmonica (also known as the blues harp or mouth organ) is a compact way of having the Blues in your pocket. Its quavery, wavery sound can be melancholic, rocking, bluesy and in Larry Adler’s case, as Scottish as the bagpipes. This week we are gathering together some of the greatest harmonica songs ever recorded – from Bob Dylan’s ‘Mr Tambourine Man’ to Neil Young’s ‘Heart of Gold’; Stevie Wonder’s ‘Fingertips’ which is pretty much how to play the harp in one song; to perhaps the greatest harmonica player of all time – Toots Thieleman – the sound behind the ‘Midnight Cowboy’ theme.

Along the way we’ll hear contributions from Mick Jagger, Magic Dick of the J Geils Band; Lee Brilleaux of the Feelgoods; Jonny Marr with the Pet Shop Boys and the greatest use of the harp in recent popular music – Beck with his freestyle performance of ‘Saw Lightning’.

Wherever I Lay My Hat

On Friday night I slept out all night in the middle of Brighton. It was just one night but at the end of it I felt wretched, cold and worthless. Yet I was doing it for one night to help the Brighton & Hove homeless charity Off The Fence raise money for the real homeless.

There were 100 of us. Shameful to think that there may three times that number sleeping rough in the streets on Brighton tonight. Here in the fifth richest nation in the world defined by GDP and 200,000 people predicted to be homeless this Christmas, this is a lament based in music.

The Whole Nine Yards Ep 41 7.11.21 Coming Home (For Bad) with Roy Stannard on Burgess Hill Radio 103.8FM

The Whole Nine Yards Season 2 Episode 141 November 7th 2021With Roy Stannard on Burgess Hill Community Radio 103.8FMComing Home (for bad)

Last week we played a selection of songs celebrating home, the people back home and returning home. I noticed when compiling this that not all songs about home are born out of positive experience. Home can also be a place to run from, dread returning to, and the theatre of bad memories – and even tragedy.

On this show we play Coming Home (for bad). Great, sad songs about home.

The Whole Nine Yards Season 2 Ep 139 All About the Bass with Roy Stannard on Burgess Hill Radio 103.8FM

All about the Bass

https://anchor.fm/roy-stannard/episodes/The-Whole-Nine-Yards-Season-2-Ep-39-All-About-the-Bass-Best-of-the-Bass-with-Roy-Stannard-on-Burgess-Hill-Radio-103-8FM-e19b3dt

Bass lines are the backbone in the composition of a song.

They tow the bottom line, they bind the melody and the rhythm and stand alone as their own instrument from time to time. But what makes a good bass line?

90% of bass players will tell you their purpose is to serve the song. Their musical role is to make everyone else on stage sound better. I’m talking about playing simpler, more tasteful bass lines. Bass lines that are less flair and more function. Bass lines that have a Expect the walls to judder and the floor to wobble..special nuance about them rather than a need to impress with hundreds of notes a second.

This week we play a selection of the best bass heartbeats in the body of songs.
