https://anchor.fm/roy-stannard/episodes/The-Whole-Nine-Yards-Ep-38-17-10-21-Wishing-0n-a-Star—Songs-of-Searching-with-Roy-Stannard-On-Burgess-Hill-Radio-103-8FM-e18tts4

Some may say that wishing is a waste of time. But at least it does take you a step closer to where you want to be. With all the chaos around us, it’s easy to find oneself yearning to turn back time, connect with others, undo mistakes, or just to leave a legacy. Whatever you wish for it’s probably been captured in a song.

This week we are playing some of the best songs ever written about hopes, dreams, searching and yearning.

Get ready to wish upon a star and fly over the rainbow.

Queens of the Voice

https://anchor.fm/roy-stannard/episodes/The-Whole-Nine-Yards-Ep-37-10-10-21-Queens-of-the-Voice-with-Roy-Stannard-on-Burgess-Hill-Radio-103-8FM-e18j99h

What makes a great female vocalist? Firstly, remember that the voice is an instrument. A good singer is not a great vocalist. The difference? Someone who can sing is…well, just that. They’re able to carry a tune, hit certain notes, and entertain others with their voice. Secondly, a great vocalist is someone who is devoted to their craft, who works incredibly hard, and who is willing to sacrifice and do what it takes to become the best they can be. So

We are focusing on truly great vocalists. The women who can change the mood of a room, lift the spirits and make the hairs stand up on the back of your neck..

The Whole Nine Yards Ep 36 3.10.21 The Jazz Creator has a masterplan with Roy Stannard on Burgess Hill Radio 103.8FM

The jazz creator has a masterplan – how jazz shaped rock

https://anchor.fm/roy-stannard/episodes/The-Whole-Nine-Yards-Ep-36-3-10-21-The-jazz-creator-has-a-masterplan-with-Roy-Stannard-on-Burgess-Hill-Radio-103-8FM-e188kp9

The sax being used as the lead instrument in Bill Haley and other rock n’ roll hits was an early example of how jazz influenced rock. In the 60s, many bands like King Crimson Jimi Hendrix, the Doors, and Cream, used jazz phrasing and chords with rock vocals. Long rock pieces like “Light My Fire” by the Doors were inspired by John Coltrane’s extended jazz improvisations.

In the late 60s the two genres met up and melded as jazz fusion. Miles Davis combined electric sounds with the smooth improvisations of jazz on the landmark album Bitches Brew. Joni Mitchell, Steely Dan, Tom Waits all took cards out of the jazz deck.

But the influence flowed both ways. This week we explore the fluid border between Jazz and Rock. And in the process showcase one of our greatest paino talents – Mark Edwards from his days in Trip Hop++ band Cactus Rain in the early 90s to the present day.

Dancefloor Jazz

That junction point where jazz meets soul meets hip-hop is the destination we are heading for this week. From the late eighties to the mid-nineties this genre led by labels such as Talkin’ Loud, Acid Jazz and others led the way in crossing genres and styles and led established labels such as Blue Note to reconsider their stables and twist and play with their back catalogues – most memorably in the case of US3. This week we play the likes of Tom Misch, The Young Disciples, Incognito from the UK as well as A Tribe Called Quest, GangStarr, Guru, De La Soul and and MC Solaar and Les Nubians from France via Chad, showing that the US and the UK don’t hold the monopoly on this rich vein of music.
