The Land of Nod

The phrase ‘Land of Nod’ originates from the Book of Genesis. It refers to the place where Cain was exiled after he killed his brother Abel. The name ‘Nod’ comes from the Hebrew root meaning “to wander,” symbolizing Cain’s life of wandering after his banishment.

Over time, the phrase evolved into a playful expression for sleep, thanks to a pun on the word “nod” (as in nodding off to sleep) popularized in the 18th century by the satirist Jonathan Swift.

Flute

The flute adds amazing possibilities to any song. Like a lofty, somehow timeless voice, adding a certain je ne sais quoi. It particularly works well in jazz contexts and where the musician is trying to create big statements as in Prog Rock or in standing on one leg scenarios as with Jethro Tull.  Intros, bridges, instrumental breaks – when a flute enters a pop song, it bursts in like a sunray and scorches the listener. Shoot from the hip; hip from the flute…

Carpe Diem

Living for the moment is important because it allows us to fully engage with the present, appreciating the here and now. By focusing on now, we can reduce anxiety about the future and regrets about the past. It’s pointless trying to change your history – or what happens next. All you have, for sure, is now. Embracing the moment lets us chew contentedly on life’s simple pleasures and maybe leave a little room for some more. Let’s seize the day with some great music. Right now.
