Breakout.

It’s the sound of chains falling away, the echo of doors swinging open. It’s the moment you realise the habits, the conventions and the parallel tracks no longer define you. Unshackling is not just a break for freedom; it’s the courage to step into the unknown, to discover the real you beneath the weight of expectation. Every song this week is a key, every lyric a Colditz tunnel, every rhythm a dive off a cliff. So let’s find out what lies beyond the map – let’s breakout.

The Enemy in Your Head

Often, we create the contours of fear, anxiety, and limited horizons in our own heads.

From Declan Donovan’s reflective ‘Perfectly Imperfect’ to Talk Talk’s early cries of dislocation, we map a journey through our inner jail cells. The songs this week highlight our internal saboteurs and how to get them to drop their weapons:

Jamie Cullum calls out anxiety, Sam Fender rails against tyrants, internal and external, and Lily Allen confronts ‘The Fear’. The fight is taken to the enemy – Lewis Capldi finding a ‘cure for minds unwell’, Alice Merton learning to live, and Lauren Daigle offering gratitude in the midst of struggle. This isn’t a soundtrack to anxiety; it’s a reminder that naming fear is the first step towards disarming it.

The Long Goodbye

The Long Goodbye was a Raymond Chandler 1953 novel ‘The Long Goodbye’ is a noir classic, later adapted into a 1973 film by Robert Altman. The phrase has since become shorthand for bittersweet departures in literature, film, and music.

In a Remembrance Sunday context, it symbolises the slow, generational process of mourning – the memory of loss echoing through time.

It’s also a reminder of remembrance, where goodbye is never truly final, but revisited year after year. This afternoon we gather the ghosts of goodbye. So sit down and remember the special people in your life and let the music do what words can’t – say farewell without having to say goodbye…

Strings Attached

Today a sweeping, salt-sprayed symphony of alternative tracks that refuse to let go of our emotions. These songs are anchored to something deeper: lush orchestral arrangements, emotional undercurrents, and the kind of beauty borne of hope in the middle of storms. Epic Indie shanties and ballads washing into your ears –  tragic Alice Martineau’s ‘Right Here’; the windswept melancholy of Talk Talk’s “I Believe in You” and the cinematic ache of Hope of the States’ “Nehemiah”. Each track carries its own weight, its own story, and often, its own shipwreck.

These are tracks that never sailed the main currents and only some reached shore.

Let’s not turn them away.

Song tales and Snail trails

We trace the shimmering snail trails of sound across the musical landscape – from Martin Quittenton’s Worthing Steamhammer origins to being the man who propelled Rod Stewart into the stratosphere, co-writing Maggie May. Plus two Scottish folk mystics, Shelagh McDonald and Richard Thompson, Elton’s suddenly prophetic Madman Across the Water and Tokyo’s jazz underground. Soul-soaked sunshine from the 70s shakes hands with acid jazz genius from the 90s, and fresh sonic postcards from 2025. It’s a journey of quiet revolutions, emotional discovery, and songs that remember what we’ve forgotten. Tune in, hold on, and follow the trail…
