The girls with Sun in their Hair

This week we explore the jazz origins of Route 66 before unleashing the Stones version on you. We play you an electrifying 80s track by Then Jerico, the band fronted by the troubled Mark Shaw who could have been Bono, but ended up as Bozo. There a couple of ad themes from the 70s (Harmony and Nimble) to tickle your nostalgia nerve- and some amazingly intimate cover versions of some all-time great songs like Waterloo Sunset and Please, Please Me. And as a bonus we showcase three female singer-songwriter stars of the future: Billie Marten; Freya Ridings and Hattie Webb. You’ll want to say you were there..

Summary

THE LOST IMMORTALS – EXPANDING YOUR MUSICAL HORIZONS

Ep 122 Sunday 25th July (AKA Roy’s 65th)

on Burgess Hill Community Radio 103.8FM with Roy Stannard and Matthew Staples

On this landmark show we explored the lost genius of Daniel Johnston across 3 tracks written by the man himself, one performed by him. We checked out Foy Vance and the links between him, Pete Townsend and Rachel Fuller – and some bloke called Ed Sheeran.

Three of the best guitar players in the history of the cosmos turned up and plugged in – Gallagher, Moore and Bourgie – sadly not as a band in their own right. We shared Cigarettes After Sex – the band – and The Common Linnets, the Dutch group who nearly won Eurovision but have gone on to become one of Americana’s finest exponents. Plus two modern, ultra cool examples of how steel drums can enhance your music.

The extended version is nearly 3 hours long on Mixcloud and Spotify

My 33rd

by Martyna Kielek

Why should I be ashamed of age

When it offered me so very much

Too many gifts I can’t afford

The thirst for knowledge

Served in bottomless goblets

Drunk in hasty bitter gulps

The shameful longing

For every place I was not wanted

Among their furtive glances

And their fingers pointed at me

And their whispers nibbling at my toes

The Acceptance and the Fight

Waltzing, brawling, sleeping

Always together, skin to skin

Fur to fur, like mama’s kittens

Still not ready to let me go

For all the things, good and scary

The harsh truths I broke my tooth on

And the soft lies that devoured me

I’ll write a love letter to life.

Episode 25

The Importance of Small Things

Why are small things important in life? It’s your choice to engineer positive change in your life. When you sit down and look at the world around you realise you can’t change how people treat you or what they say about you. All you can do is to change how you react to it. But if you focus on the small things you will stop reacting – and start responding to life.

‘The Importance of Small Things’ in words and music. Songs that take you to the recesses of memory, the childhood places; summer holidays long ago; the friends you had – and may still have.

Don’t just react. Respond.
