The Rotterdam Incident

Last weekend I tuned into Eurovision. That’s what lockdown does to you. The Italian winners were Red Hot Chilli Peppers fronted by a young Michael Hutchence. The runner up was a delicate Edith Piaf flower re-potted. However two acts stood out. The Norwegian entry Tix performed his own song about the experience of having Tourettes and The Belgian group Hooverphonic who had been a major band in the early 2000s and the only act in my iTunes collection. We’ll ask why these acts didn’t get anywhere. We’ll also look at the career of Adrian Gurvitz – a musician who made the transition from rock guitarist to romantic songwriter to Yacht rock and then to worldwide acclaim as a songwriter-producer. We’ll play some excellent electronica – and introduce you to two superb young UK female acts who are future Mercury Award winners along with a young UK male musician called Hider who is unsigned but has 50,000 plays a month on Spotify. Let’s throw open your doors of reception.

The Gospel Truth

Gospel music has its origins in the hymns, spirituals and sacred songs in Afro-American culture in the 18th and 19th Centuries. Gospel songs were sung by African slaves about escaping to freedom, and giving thanks to God.

Its music features prominent sections for solo singers. The lead vocalist improvises around the melody while the rest of the choir sing backing vocals, often with question and answer, or call and response. Its spirit and passion permeates the whole of popular music and often pops up in surprising places. But the voices all have one thing in common – they are pleading to be heard.

The Whole Nine Yards Season 2 Ep 13 25.4.21 Songs from the Soul with Roy Stannard on Burgess Hill Radio 103.8FM

Summary

The Whole Nine Yards 25.4.21
Show 13
Songs from the Soul with Roy Stannard

Soul  and Gospel music gets closer than any other kind of music to an  outpouring of the sheer essence of humanity. More than any other genre  of popular American music, Soul is the result of the combination and  merging of the black experience from slavery in the 19th Century to the  ‘I can’t breathe’ cries of George Floyd.  Soul grew from two parents:  Gospel (the sacred) and Blues (the profane). Blues was a musical style  that praised the fleshly desire whereas gospel was more oriented toward  spiritual inspiration. We’ll show how the outpourings of the soul cross  oceans, peoples and cultures from Africa via Memphis to downtown Brixton.
