The Whole Nine Yards with Roy Stannard 7.2.21

Summary

Originally broadcast of Burgess Hill Radio 103.3FM 3-5pm Sunday 7th February 2021

Ep 471 / #2 on Burgess Hill Radio

Some musicians talk about just knocking off a tune when a song comes together quickly. This week we look at the strange similarity of the Coldplay Song Viva La Vida to three other songs from the seventies, 2000s and just after the Viva La Vida album was released in 2008. Plagiarism or just something in the water – you decide..

We listen to a variety of Cure Covers from Mumm-Ra to Adele, find out what happened to the briefly Brighton based songstress Raissa and the Mummers Project and investigate how another Raissa aged just 22 has been feted as the next big pop sensation by producer Mark Ronson, no less. We’ll also compare and contrast the 80s dream pop collective This Mortal Coil and darlings of the slightly left of centre dinner party, London Grammar. And after a brilliant return to The Whole Nine Yards on last week’s show we go back to 2003 and hear Alison David’s distinctive vocals on Red Snapper’s ‘Image of You’.

In this show we play our first Hungarian track, visit Russia, track the career of Tracey Thorn, hear a self penned poem by one of our listeners set to Debussy mixed with punk, blues, Latin, Frech pop, Spanish pop using Pachelbel’s Canon and Van Morrison ‘Full Force Gale’ on which Ry Cooder plays sublime slide guitar
