Flora and Trauma

Like music, flowers bring happiness, but can also mark times of grief and loss. For as long as people have been writing songs, they’ve been using flowers as metaphors, props and symbols for life, love and death.

Flowers in music often represent a romance, regardless of whether that romance is blossoming or wilting away. Songs about  buttercups, daisies, tulips and other song blossoms abound.

There are more songs about roses than any other flower, with around 62% of all ‘flower’ songs based around roses. You’ll hear the Jaguar-sponsored Desert Rose from Sting and Seal’s three times Grammy-winning ‘Kiss From a Rose’. Whether as garlands or wreaths, flowers have inspired great music.

Glock ‘n’ Roll

A bit like the triangle, the glockenspiel is an under-valued and under-used instrument. Although similar to the xylophone, the glockenspiel’s bars are metal plates or tubes, whilst the Xylophone’s are made of wood.  You may think that metallophone percussion is a bit niche, but  the show is permeated with Glock rock.

There’s a review of the new releases, a few classics from bands that threatened to be as big as Coldplay – and Norman Wisdom. Naturally.

The Rotterdam Incident

Last weekend I tuned into Eurovision. That’s what lockdown does to you. The Italian winners were Red Hot Chilli Peppers fronted by a young Michael Hutchence. The runner up was a delicate Edith Piaf flower re-potted. However two acts stood out. The Norwegian entry Tix performed his own song about the experience of having Tourettes and The Belgian group Hooverphonic who had been a major band in the early 2000s and the only act in my iTunes collection. We’ll ask why these acts didn’t get anywhere. We’ll also look at the career of Adrian Gurvitz – a musician who made the transition from rock guitarist to romantic songwriter to Yacht rock and then to worldwide acclaim as a songwriter-producer. We’ll play some excellent electronica – and introduce you to two superb young UK female acts who are future Mercury Award winners along with a young UK male musician called Hider who is unsigned but has 50,000 plays a month on Spotify. Let’s throw open your doors of reception.
