The Corsairs?

Allan Mansield of A.M. Appliances told me about his stepfather Martin Romer who was the drummer in 60s UK beat group The Corsairs. Martin who is now in his 80s is hoping to tune in to hear himself behind the drumkit on ‘Pay Back with Interest’. Just for good measure we play the doo-wop Corsairs and the contemporary Hull Indie band of the same name. We discover how it is that 80s funk band Maze has the same guitar riff as Scotland’s Love and Money. We also play two versions of ‘Tiny Cities Made of Ashes’ that show how the same song can sound unrecognisable in different hands.

Rap, Crackle and Bop

In the 80s an underground movement emerged called Jazz Dance. A blend of vernacular jazz, tap, ballet, West Indies and African dance traditions, these UK jazz dancers blew holes in the dancefloor with their intricate footwork, hipster tricks, and tireless energy. Although Paul Weller didn’t play this kind of music, his connection with the UK Acid jazz scene was a strong one. Along with him, we’ll play some new music where pop meets soul and vice versa.

Sunburnt in the shade

Musicians have used fire to represent love and desire in songs, burning emotions can create passion, but can also lead to burn out and despair. In 2005 Brighton Institute of Modern Music (BIMM) put out a compilation of student bands called ‘How to Mend a Broken Pier’. On it was a band called Supersmile led by Simon Kaye. I think we may have tracked down Simon to Melbourne and have included a 2018 track from him. There’s a 1966 band called Monks who literally created holes in their hair. There’s a track from Lady Blackbird – in the highest echelon of soul singers in the world. And what is the link between Galaxy and Baby-D? This will end. But not until 7pm..

Being Brave

Not everyone wants to be brave – and that’s OK. If you feel better being vulnerable or seeking support when faced with challenges, that’s fine. Being brave is not compulsory; it’s a personal choice. People have different coping mechanisms, and there’s no one-size-fits-all approach to handling life’s ups and downs. Ultimately, the key is to be true to yourself, try to avoid any regrets and just let the music play..

Music Manifestos

There was a time when bands made as many manifestos as they made records.

A manifesto is what you want to change in the world through your art.

Music isn’t just about how to write a song, it’s about making a cultural impact. Manifestos have the power to spark whole movements, provoke social change, and cause revolutions that change our vision of art, music and beyond.

They can predict the future. They can re-set the past..
