Making a Noise in the Nineties

By the end of the 90s record companies had pensioned off the 7 inch, cassette and CD single. In the short run it meant CD album sales soared, but in the long run it was a recipe for disaster. In 1999 Canadian record producer Terry McManus wrote “It’s when the music industry made its greatest mistake. It stopped making vinyl singles and offered nothing to replace them. It stopped a whole generation from picking up the record-buying habit.”

However, the decade that brought us Britpop and Britney also created some amazing music.

Here’s some of the tracks that didn’t appear on MTV.

Experts in a dying field

Music has become has become the digital polyfilla of everyday life. It fills the cracks between meetings, arrivals and departures. You don’t own it, you stream it. You don’t collect it, you subscribe to services who tell you what you like, even if you don’t.

We’ve lost the serendipitous moment of hearing a seminal song on the radio, in a shop or bought as a present by someone who listens to us and what we listen to. This may be the last post, the last wagon train pulled into a grooved circle. One of the last shows of its kind.

A show of surprises. 850 followers on Facebook don’t want to be autotuned. Join them..

Surviving the Eighties

(Image: Sharbat Bibi, taken by photojournalist Steve McCurry for June 1985 cover of National Geographic magazine)

It was the best and worst of times. A tale of two music scenes.

On  the one hand it was the time of the great pop behemoths like Madonna,  George Michael and Michael Jackson. On the other, the  back streets and  suburbs were packed with post punk bands, acid jazz revellers, Indie  kids and the first head-spinning hip-hop moves.

It  was the age of the synthesiser and New Romantics. It was also the time  of The Miners’ Strikes and bands like Half Man, Half Biscuit and The  Fall.  I remember walking past the Grand hotel on the 13th October 1984,  the day after the IRA bombing and thinking ‘How will we survive this?’

The music helped. Here’s some of it..

The Beautiful South recorded a beautiful and unconventional version of ‘The One That I Want’ and in the week that Olivia Newton-John passed we play it in tribute. Followed by another unexpected cover of ‘We’ll Meet Again’ by Joe Henry with no bluebirds in sight. Nick Cave and James Taylor provide covers of two Leonard Cohen songs, submitted independently and without collusion by 2 contributors. Belle and Sebastian and Arab Strap battle it out in a fierce Glasgow kiss. Plus the first track on the first album by Bon Jovi performed invigoratingly live in Tokyo. Hannah Williams & The Affirmations, another great soul/blues singer and band from Bristol, gets a call from Jay-Z asking to sample her song ‘Late Nights & Heartbreaks’. Fortunately it didn’t go to voicemail..

Lost in the Seventies

Although I was born in the 50s when Heartbreak Hotel was Number One, and was a teenager in the 60s when all boys had to be either Paul McCartney or John (Lennon in my case) when my interest in music as a subculture began, I came of age in the early Seventies.  The decade which arguably had the most diverse collection of musical styles of any era – from reggae to ska, disco to punk, protest to teenybop, prog rock to pub rock, soul to hip-hop, Kraut Rock to Yacht Rock. And then there was Glam..

For the last 2 hours Mimms has been celebrating the 80s and 90s. For the next two we’re going to sneak into the 70s to listen to classic songs that, unlike the Sweeney, managed to avoid being smashed, grabbed or lined up in a pop identity parade.
