Celebration / The Baritones

The baritone voice is typically written in the range from the second G below middle C to the G above middle C (G2–G4) although it can be extended at either end. However, the baritone voice is determined not only by its vocal range, but also by its timbre, which tends to be darker than that of the typical tenor voice.

The term baritone was developed in relation to classical and operatic voices, where the classification is based not merely on the singer’s vocal range but also on the tessitura and timbre of the voice. Rock has made good use of it too. Here are some of the best.

Out of the Shadows

The shadow is often used as a symbol of the dark side of human nature. Light and shade.  A total eclipse of the heart, the dark side of the moon.

But the shadow is also often a place of refuge, offering shade, anonymity and safety out of the limelight. The question is, does your shadow follow you or do you follow it?

Lose your price tag

The Greek Stoic Philosopher Epictetus said ‘Wealth consists not in having great possessions, but in having few wants.’

America’s Black Friday has been adopted by retailers this side of the pond in order to create a new, pre-Christmas holy day of spending, consumerism and quasi-giving. Why is it called Black Friday? Because it helps the retail industry get out of the red. Its sacred shrines are Oxford and Bond Street. Instead of Lourdes, the pilgrimage ends at Fortnum and Mason and Harrods. From its origins as the day after Thanksgiving when workers would take an additional day off, it has become a huge festival of thanks for the retail sector, lasting until the Boxing Day sales.

Not surprisingly, many penniless musicians have written about the dangers of materialism.

Bye Bye. Fly Fly.  The art of Leaving

Winners do quit. But rather than seeing leaving as a failure, they turn their energy to the next venture… and the next, and the next. Sometimes quitting is good. It’s really important,” says Eric Barker, author of ‘Barking Up the Wrong Tree’. “There are only 24 hours in a day. If you never quit anything, you’re going to have less time for the things that really matter.”

Research shows that, sometimes, walking away from a job, relationship or even a dream can make you happier, healthier and more successful.

You may be working towards the wrong goals to begin with. Even if an ambition was once a good fit, it might not be later. After all, if we never gave up on anything we’d all still be in our first jobs and wearing nappies.

Chances/Choices

We are all trekkers on the Tibetan path to enlightenment – or at least which supermarket to shop in. We carry our accumulated life choices in a heavy rucksack, hoping we don’t get stopped at customs. Some people point to accidents, coincidences, serendipity – others argue that there are only choices. Regardless of the individual decisions we make, we are much greater than the sum of our choices.

Life chances influence your life choices. Your ability to make choices relates directly to the freedoms that privilege or privation bestow upon you.

Both large and small choices can change our life. Why did you sit next to that girl on the bus, who is now your wife? Why were you in a bus and not a 1st class carriage?
