Christmas Music Therapy

Music is good for you, especially Christmas music. Studies show that listening to music has all kinds of positive effects on your body and mind, and your favourite Christmas music can be beneficial during what is often a busy, stressful time. Here’s how seasonal music makes you feel better:

• Christmas music can improve your mood your favourite Christmas tune has a pleasant neurological effect in which the brain’s pleasure circuit is stimulated, releasing dopamine and serotonin (which are responsible for those happy feelings

• Christmas music is good for your memory Studies show music therapy will actually help maintain or rehabilitate cognitive abilities in patients suffering from dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.

• Christmas music can decrease stress levels Christmas tunes you love are good for your heart. Your blood pressure, heart rate, and cortisol levels can all be decreased and therefore reduce stress

• Christmas music can even reduce pain Music therapy has been used to treat people with chronic pain, and in one study, patients who listened to music in recovery after surgery needed less morphine to manage their pain. Focusing on music engages your mind and allows less room for pain pathways in your brain. And because seasonal music can help relieve stress, it also helps relieve muscle tension that leads to pain.

Blue Christmas

Christmas is defined largely by the media by the media. Just think about the annual John Lewis ad which sets out a perfect family Christmas but that is a myth for a lot of people. Social media is swamped by happy family images, Christmas trees and mince pies but this often the glitter not the substance. But what if Christmas was not about spending money, eating drinking. What if there was something else to celebrate?

What if you made it less about you.

What if you focused on people, not possessions.

What if you remembered whose day it really is..

Then the Season’s greeting may be an optimistic hello to the new year, rather than simply a goodbye to the old.

Runaway

Running away is probably one of the most common themes in music.

Whether it’s running away from home or escaping with someone, the idea of running away seems to inspire artists of all genres and ages.

Sometimes it just comes without a reason – simply getting away does imply a sense of freedom. Music about breaking free can be really emotional but also very liberating.

And feeling free is something that a lot of musicians like to express in their music.

In the end, isn’t music one of the best ways to escape?

After the end of the road

This year two of my music heroes passed on to the next sound stage. Gary Brooker on the 22nd February and Wilko Johnson on the 21st of this month. Both were from my home town of Southend and both made music that was unique and eternal. Albeit in different ways.

Both had versions of the 1000 yard stare, although in Brooker’s case this mellowed to around 500 yards as he got older.

Like faith, music never dies and songs morph and take different shape years after being written. Route 66 is one of those. Written by Bob Troup in the mid forties, it went from a jazz foot tapper with Nat King Cole to a Lee Brilleaux snarl with Doctor Feelgood. A Whiter Shade of Pale, with its Matthew Fisher composed echoes of JS Bach, was a worldwide No 1 in 1967 but it changed shape and form over the years –  forever being sculpted by its writer Gary Brooker. It seems right to play a version recorded in New York’s Cathedral of St. John the Divine in 2016.

Also featuring the world radio radio debut of Scarlett Chapman and her charity single ‘Home’ in aid of Off The Fence homeless charity.

What happens after the end of the road? Answer: The next road..
