Lost in the Seventies

Although I was born in the 50s when Heartbreak Hotel was Number One, and was a teenager in the 60s when all boys had to be either Paul McCartney or John (Lennon in my case) when my interest in music as a subculture began, I came of age in the early Seventies.  The decade which arguably had the most diverse collection of musical styles of any era – from reggae to ska, disco to punk, protest to teenybop, prog rock to pub rock, soul to hip-hop, Kraut Rock to Yacht Rock. And then there was Glam..

For the last 2 hours Mimms has been celebrating the 80s and 90s. For the next two we’re going to sneak into the 70s to listen to classic songs that, unlike the Sweeney, managed to avoid being smashed, grabbed or lined up in a pop identity parade.

Broke, not broken

Poverty is horrible but most of us will probably need to get more used to it.

So this week a few anecdotes about things you can do without breaking the bank, how we used to make our own entertainment and what is central and essential in our lives Many of the musicians who wrote todays music about the circumstances they were in had little or no money.

Consider these songs about being broke a guide to leaving poverty behind, or maybe a look into the harmful economic cycle that plagues so many. But while the characters in these songs about being poor may suffer from lack of funds, the music, the experiences and the resilience are very rich indeed.
