Preachin’ to the Choir

We’ve all felt the chills when hearing the awe-inspiring roar of a gospel choir join into the melody of a song. When reaching the crescendo into hand-clapping, feet-stomping choir vocals, it’s hard to resist belting out right along with them. Rock, soul and gospel all love choirs. A harmony of voices produces something celestial.

Choirs with edge. Hooks and harmonies. Different voices.

Love Me Don’t

Is there anything more heart-breaking than loving someone when you know deep down you can never be together? It seems so unlike the movies, Mills and Boone or even Love Island. True romance can often become truly one-sided.

If that’s you, you’ll be able to relate to some of these songs. It’s a common condition – some of the best songwriters have experienced it.  Even music legends have to accept things don’t always go their way.

This show has been inspired by the new Baz Lurhmann movie – Elvis and begins and ends with songs from the film.

Hour One

Elvis Presley – Always on my Mind (The Wonder of You with the London Philharmonic Orchestra 2016)

Believed that Dr Feelgood wrote ‘Down at the Doctor’s’?

Ever wondered what Slip-in Mules are?

Intrigued to hear what Dolores O’Riordan sounds like with a dub backing track?

Is Kate Bush’s own version of ‘Running Up That Hill’ the best around?

Wonder what Swedish/Norwegian acid jazz sounds like?

Miss Otis Regrets, but has learned to love herself anyway..

Regret and resentment are the gaolers of personal freedom. Giving yourself the space to accept your mistakes enables you to learn and develop as a person. So the message of today’s show is apologise to anyone you’ve let down, let yourself off the hook and then enjoy the weight falling from your shoulders.

Today we’re going to use music to ask:

  • If we are all human beings and inherently worth the same, why don’t we act like it?
  • Ask yourself: How is self-deprecation or low self-esteem helping me?
  • What would happen if you stopped smalling yourself down?
  • What ignites your negativity and self-doubt?
  • Does what you think affect what you do and feel?
  • Who can you thank or compliment today?
  • What is it you really want? And what will that give you?
  • Forgive yourself. Everyone else from God downwards already has.

The Whole Nine Yards Ep 73 19.6.22 French Pressing: the French songs that crossed the Channel

French Pressings

France has a great reputation for many things (revolutions, stifling bureaucracy, snails) but pop music is not on the list. Despite being the country that produced the genius of Daft Punk, the breathtaking soundscapes of Air, and eccentric sixties Whitney Houston fan Serge Gainsbourg, little French music is heard outside Francophone countries.

So where does this negativity come from? A lot of it comes from French people themselves, who are not overly keen on the musical output of their own country. And the fact that French radios are legally obliged to play 40% French music. Which is a bit like having to do your homework before you get to go on the playstation..

So this week we’re playing some of the best and in some cases very familiar French songs, many of which got translated into English and then went on to be huge..
