Fields of Gold
On Friday 9th April we heard the sad news that Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh had passed away at the age of 99 after 73 years of marriage. A couple of the songs at the beginning of the show are played in recognition of the fact that he wasn’t just the Queen’s consort, he was her husband. The other songs are the imaginary soundtrack to a road trip from nowhere to somewhere with some of the brightest new talents around – a little like we loved to play our mixtapes when we got into a car. When the landscape looks bleak remember the fields of gold.
Music for the journey through your emotions and the tape that slides into the slot.

Easter Sunday
The Uprising
Seasonal songs rarely include Easter. So for this show on Easter Day we played some music inspired by Easter, some that symbolises resurrection and the rise after the fall.
We make room for an emotional reading of WB Yeats ‘Easter 2016’ by Liam Neeson with music by Zachary David. A couple of classic hymns and gospel songs are reinvented for 2021 and we feature a range of songs asked for people who want to say hi to friends and family that they won’t be seeing this Easter. And we’ll remember why this day is so special. Can radio do Easter? Yes it can..

Passport to #LaLaLand
Right now, we all want a ticket to La-la Land. In fact we all want a ticket to just about anywhere. The expression La-La land seems to date back to 1979 when people used it to mean a mystical, whimsical place inspired by la la refrains used in songs.
It then became shorthand for Los Angeles and the dream world created by the magic of celluloid there before becoming the name of a blockbuster movie in 2016. Jazz pianist Ryan Gosling and aspiring actress Emma Stone realise their dreams of stardom in La La Land.
The rest of us secretly wish that we had a place like that where we can forget our worries, dream of better days and join in the chorus of la las. Blue skies and clandy floss skies. This is your passport to a paradise lost..

Planet Zero: The Warmth of the Sun
We’re experiencing the perfect storm of a pandemic, Brexit and global warming waiting like the three horses of the Apocalypse on the horizon of our dreams of the Costa Brava.
As Jarvis Cocker eloquently puts it, our ice caps are turning to slush and even David Attenborough looks tired. Greenpeace is ripening into yellow peace and we’re all worrying about the battery life of our new cars. Emily Barker enquires in song ‘Where have all the sparrows gone’ and we hear a poem from Maya Angelou about ‘The Caged Bird that Sings’.
As long ago as 1969 Yes were singing about ‘Survival’ and as Woodstock came and went and the airports, parking lots and politicians fall silent, we listen to A-ha sing of Mother Nature dying and going to Heaven. Not world music this week, but music lamenting the world.
