Passport to #LaLaLand

Right now, we all want a ticket to La-la Land. In fact we all want a ticket to just about anywhere. The expression La-La land seems to date back to 1979 when people used it to mean a mystical, whimsical place inspired by la la refrains used in songs.

It then became shorthand for Los Angeles and the dream world created by the magic of celluloid there before becoming the name of a blockbuster movie in 2016. Jazz pianist Ryan Gosling and aspiring actress Emma Stone realise their dreams of stardom in La La Land.

The rest of us secretly wish that we had a place like that where we can forget our worries, dream of better days and join in the chorus of la las. Blue skies and clandy floss skies. This is your passport to a paradise lost..

The Whole Nine Yards Ep 6 7.3.21 Planet Zero: The Warmth of the Sun with Roy Stannard on Burgess Hill Radio 103.8FM

Summary

The Whole Nine Yards 7.3.21

Show 6 with Roy Stannard on http://www.burgesshillradio.co.uk 103.8FM

Planet Zero: The Warmth of the Sun

We’re experiencing the perfect storm of a pandemic, Brexit and global warming waiting like the three horses of the Apocalypse on the horizon of our dreams of the Costa Brava.

As Jarvis Cocker eloquently puts it, our ice caps are turning to slush and even David Attenborough looks tired. Greenpeace is ripening into yellow peace and we’re all worrying about the battery life of our new cars. Emily Barker enquires in song ‘Where have all the sparrows gone’ and we hear a poem from Maya Angelou about ‘The Caged Bird that Sings’.

As long ago as 1969 Yes were singing about ‘Survival’ and as Woodstock came and went and the airports, parking lots and politicians fall silent, we listen to A-ha sing of Mother Nature dying and going to Heaven. Not world music this week, but music lamenting the world.

Lost Immortals Ep 101 28.2.21

Summary

Lost Immortals Ep 101

with Roy Stannard, Howard Popeck and Matt Staples

Burgess Hill Radio Sunday 28th February 2021 5-7pm on 103.8fm and http://www.burgesshillradio.co.uk

This week one of our FB group chose songs to remember a loved friend who has passed.

By  a strange juxtaposition of the planets and other elements many of the  songs this week have to do with love, loss and fading memory.

4Keus  and Sidike Diabate observe that ‘It is God who gives’, Richard Thompson  that ‘Good things happen to bad people’; the Godfathers sing that ‘I’m  Lost and then I’m Found’; Lyle Lovett reflects that ‘Promises’ sometimes  go unmet and Johnny Cash reflects that it’s ‘In your mind’.

Neil  Diamond philosphises on death in ‘And the the grass will pay no mind’;  Carol Kidd sings a jazz lament ‘When I Dream’ and Joe Brown makes a  ukelele weep in ‘I’ll see you in my dreams’ and we finish with The  streets ‘Dry Your Eyes’ – arguably the tenderest song ever from a rap  artist.

Songs in the key of Isolation

Songs written in and about the pandemic

Whilst most of us have mooched about indoors during lockdown, the music community has been busier than usual. Deprived of the opportunity to tour, many musicians have taken to home studios and the internet to create, collaborate and record their response to Covid.

This has produced some brilliant work as you will hear. The artists whose music I am sharing today include Michael Stipe of REM, Kings of Leon, Alicia Keys, Bono, Matt Bellamy of Muse, Morrissey, Billie Eilish, Foals and Future Islands. This afternoon I’m proud to present some of the best music out there at present. Our music community is still writing and performing. Are you listening?
